You sleep hard then you wake up You got your eyes on a new thing We’re outside and we’re mystified Why’re you doing what you’re doing? You could stop, it’d be okay Instead of dreaming your life away Fell for their tricks, now truly All that stuff makes you look goofy You’ve got a dog now, you say Has to be a Frenchie, soufflé Fell for those tricks, but daily Dressing up both you and poochie But you’ve got priorities And everything is Ougie-Bougie Ougie-Bougie Here on the path to a new you The roads diverge, and you’re tired Don’t do this, do do that You hesitate and this deal expires We don’t care what the rulebooks say We’re wearing white after Labor Day Fell for their tricks, now truly All that stuff is tres tres outre Put out your hand, why shake it? That’s no way to proletariat Fall for those tricks now daily Credit cards are maxed, it’s crazy But you’ve got strong preferences and Everything is Ougie-Bougie Ougie-Bougie You can stop, it’ll be okay Instead of dreaming your life away It’s all you’ll never know Everything is just for show Fall for those tricks, now truly All that stuff makes us look goofy Show off that check-mark, bluey Verified and whooped-doo-ee Fell for those tricks, but daily Never time for smoothie-saily Die for priorities and everything And Ougie-Bougie Ougie-Bougie

Your legs your beating heart You ran too fast I blame the car And falling down was never in your plan
You gasp and cry hardly a sound I feel you slowing down Your legs twitch, silent, not a sound I cry, hardly a sound at all It’s still at night Still, life at night is Never wanting to see the light of day You see better at night anyway Still, you run too fast for your beating heart Still life in watercolors Dripping like mascara down my face You silent like a prop Too small to notice and they didn’t even stop You never knew They never knew And it was all to fast but I saw everything And that’s life Never wanting to see the light of day You see better at night anyway Still, you run too fast for your beating heart Stiff legs, your beating heart You ran and I still blame the car You gasp, I cry and stare at nothing Never wanting to see the light of day You see better at night anyway Still, you run too fast for your beating heart

about

One day, for no particular reason, the phrase "ougie bougie" popped into my head and stuck. I realized I had no choice and would have to write a song. Originally, I thought it was going to be a sort of demented pastiche of the Roy Orbison song "Ooby Dooby" but it evolved. You can still hear that in the riff, I think.

I worked on the tune and lyrics sporadically over 2019 but never found the time to really do anything with it what with life and all. Then, oh, hai, COVID-19. So I set to work in earnest. But really, it wasn't until I dug up the old song "Still Life at Night" and Paula added the incredible, aching strings to it that I realized I'd ought to take this thing seriously. In the end, we came up with what I think it a pretty fine little 9-minute experience.

about

Aaron Tap Los Angeles, California

Aaron Tap is terrible at branding. So he releases shit from both his current band Frank Shirts and, lately, the resurrected Boston trio Betty Goo, and maybe someday even a solo record. There are themes, yeah, but mostly it's whatever spirit moves the music that decides what name it goes by.

Aaron also plays and sings with Matt Nathanson, the Paula Kelley Orchestra, and Populuxe.
